Chiparus at the Ballet Russ
As you guys know, I love Art Deco.
Recently, I discovered Demetre Chiparus - an art Deco sculptor.
Chiparus was born in 1886 in Romania and then moved to Paris right before WWI. He attended the famous Ecole des Beaux Arts in France.
Most of his work was a combination of Bronze and Ivory.
This past week, I was at Sotheby's in New York where 12 of his beautiful pieces featuring the dancers of the Ballet Russe (Russian Ballet) were being auctioned. They are so very beautiful, I thought I'd share with you all!
(All of these images are from Sotheby's)
Look at the amazing folds in her cape...

Post a CommentWOW. These are beautiful.
Oh, wow, I like all of them. I got all excited, too, because I thought the Russian ballet was coming to NYC.
From the title of your post.
OOOOOOOOOOO
One time on Antiques Roadshow, some guy had one of these, and had no idea what it was - it was worth over $100k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RCL - i've read that there are A LOT of fakes b/c these are so hard to find. In the sotheby's auction, i think the cheapest one was over $200k, the most expensive went for over $2 million.....
Ooooh, VERY pretty. I love art that's interesting and pretty at the same timeb

Yeah, the ivory on the face of the one the guy had on AR was a little cracked, so it appraised for less because of the condition
These are beautiful!
RCL, I was going to mention that Antiques Roadshow episode too! Man. If it was worth $100k back then, imagine what it's worth now. He had one of the large size statues. Didn't he get it at a yard sale for like a hundred bucks?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these!!!!!! There is something so medieval about them GORGEOUS
Beautiful - I love the last one.
And, I'm glad I'm not the only person under 65 who watches Antiques Roadshow.
Beautiful, I love anything with dancers!
Do you know if all 12 objects sold and if so, for what prices? They are all sublime, so I imagine they ran off the auction house shelves.
I have suggested to readers of my article on Chiparus that they follow the link to your blog - your photos are beautiful.
